Contemplations.

April 2020 started with me making hundreds of masks,
in white & neutral colors.

While other artists were sharing the art they were creating
I felt the pressure to keep as many people as possible safe, I didn't realize how angry I felt until I stopped making them. The loss, the fear, the anger at the people and politicians in my area who refused to care about the safety of others. I refused to make another mask until I was challenged to make a mobile from them. I have returned to making masks, in many bright fabrics; adapting the pattern for the best fit so everyone can wear it in comfort. The virus has changed our lives and I want to do all I can as an artist to keep as many people healthy as possible.

Womb of the Nation

Simple Lines: SAQA Regional Show
I studied maps of the area that is Washington DC throughout the mapmaking history of the area trying to find the spark to create the work for this show.

The towns and cities built up, more roads & transit were added.
Originally I thought I would be layering the maps, each layer simple with a complex end result.
As I started drawing I realized the one constant was the waterways.
Waterways, that took on the female form.
Washington was designed to be the foundation for the Nation for all, but men have used it to benefit those who already have the power.
The convergence of the Potomac & Anacostia Rivers drains away life in self-interest.
Can the waters wash away the hate & greed and give life to a country where all are given a chance to live?

Created in September 2021 while listening to coverage of the Texas abortion ban.
