The I Choose, Therefore I Am Project is a peaceful protest and public art exhibition created by textile artist, curator, and activist Rachelle LeBlanc shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022. The project aims to explore textile art's subversive potential and gives artists working with textile-based an opportunity to voice the female experience concerning women's rights through art. These rights include the right to choose for herself, to live free from violence, discrimination from skin color, reproductive rights, sexual rights, including the LGBTQ+ community, and exploitation.

Textile art is a powerful form of discourse that transforms complex ideas and celebrates traditional skills while simultaneously giving importance to new innovative material processes. It is also a powerful tool for communication that helps bring difficult conversations forward through craftivism and its unique role in effecting social and environmental change.

Where there is a choice, there is a voice to choose with complete liberty and freedom for oneself. It is all-encompassing, and the heartbeat of Amnesty International's Women's Rights are Human Rights. What does this mean to you? How is this expressed through art? The answer to these questions can be found in the artworks within.

The permanent online exhibition opens on March 11, 2023.

This exhibition seeks to unravel the layers of complexity and indulgence found in the realm of maximalism, showcasing the beauty that emerges when more is truly more. We aim to challenge traditional norms and push the boundaries of artistic expression by featuring a diverse array of artworks, installations, and designs that embody the extravagance, the lavishness, and the exuberance of maximalism. The exhibition will highlight bold colors, patterns, textures, intricate detail, and overwhelming visual richness. We envision the gallery walls to be clad in bold patterns and color. Graphic designers who produce fabric and wallpaper are also encouraged to apply.

This exhibition will be open to the public in the Main Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, from June 7, 2024, to August 25, 2024.

Pop! Art with Mass Appeal

  • Google Calendar ICS

JURIED BY: Keri Towler, Director of Collections, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center invites emerging and established artists to submit original artworks to ‘POP! Art with Mass Appeal.’ This exhibition seeks to showcase artworks that capture the essence or provide commentary on pop art's evolution in the digital age. Artists are encouraged to delve into the vibrant world of popular media and consumer culture, exploring how it shapes and redefines our views of each other, society, and the world. From traditional pop art aesthetics, to internet memes and viral fame, to music and television references, popular animation and illustration styles, logos and icons,  we invite artists to interpret this theme with creativity, imagination, satire, and/or a sense of humor. This show seeks art that embraces bold colors, dynamic compositions, and a graphic style that defines the heart of pop art. Whether through traditional mediums or digital formats, we are looking for artwork that visually resonates with the energy, intensity--and even the absurdity-- of contemporary popular culture.

This exhibition will be open to the public in the Kay Daugherty Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, from May 3, 2024, to September 22, 2024.

PLAY: 31ST ANNUAL STRATHMORE JURIED EXHIBITION

Play is a pathway to connection, innovation, and renewal. We use play to sustain our creativity, build relationships, and cultivate a love of life. Play can be done in isolation or in groups. It means action in athletics, rehearsal, in music, and in drama; it is the material to be animated. Play works with restrained rules, or it can be the act of breaking rules. It can be formula and pattern, or it can be experimental and adaptive. Play transcends age and species, occurring shortly after birth and is observed in animals of the earth and ocean. We invite artists to “play” both in representation and in abstraction, but most significantly, in an enjoyable form. Strathmore Manison

I Choose, Therefore I am Project

I Choose, Therefore I am is a public art project created and curated by artist Rachelle LeBlanc. It will give artists working in fiber and textile-based materials, methods, and techniques a place to show their best work by expressing themselves through their perspective on how these changes affect their lives. These rights include the right to choose for herself, to live free from violence, discrimination from skin color, equal pay, reproductive rights, sexual rights, including the LGBTQ community, and exploitation, to name a few.

Where there is a choice, there is a voice to choose with complete liberty and freedom for oneself. This right is all-encompassing and is the heartbeat of Amnesty International's Women's Rights are Human Rights. What does this mean to you? How is this expressed through your art? This is your opportunity to show your work to the world and shout from the rooftops that women will no longer sit by while their rights get whittled away.

The piece will be on the website but not in the in-person exhibit.
